About the Uppercase Converter
An uppercase converter rewrites your text in capital letters, so Order ref ab-1234 becomes ORDER REF AB-1234. It follows the full Unicode rules: é keeps its accent as É, and the German ß turns into SS.
Forms are a common reason to need it. Visa applications, customs declarations and bank forms in many countries ask for block capitals, and shipping labels are easier to read in them. Developers use it for codes and names in code: a booking reference, a country code, or a phrase turned into MAX_RETRY_COUNT with the CONSTANT_CASE button or into a class name with PascalCase.
- Paste your text into Text to Convert to UPPERCASE.
- UPPERCASE is selected when the page opens, so capitals appear under UPPERCASE Text as you type.
- For names in code, click CONSTANT_CASE for constants and environment variables, or PascalCase for classes and components. The heading changes to Result (CONSTANT_CASE) or Result (PascalCase).
- Copy the output into your form or file. If the field has a length limit, check it after converting, because a word with
ßgets longer.
InputMusterstraße 12, 80331 MünchenOutputMUSTERSTRASSE 12, 80331 MÜNCHENß becomes SS, so the address grows from 30 to 31 characters. Digits and punctuation don't change.
Inputuser profile cardOutputUPPERCASE: USER PROFILE CARD
CONSTANT_CASE: USER_PROFILE_CARD
PascalCase: UserProfileCardCONSTANT_CASE and PascalCase find the word breaks in plain words, camelCase, snake_case or kebab-case. apiBaseUrl gives API_BASE_URL and ApiBaseUrl.
InputΚαλημέρα ΑθήναOutputΚΑΛΗΜΈΡΑ ΑΘΉΝΑGreek spelling leaves accents off words written all in capitals (ΚΑΛΗΜΕΡΑ ΑΘΗΝΑ), but toUpperCase() and this converter keep them. Remove them by hand for Greek signs and headings.
When uppercase changes the length or the meaning
Uppercasing isn't always one letter in, one letter out. Keep these in mind when you store, compare or count the result:
ßbecomesSS, soStraße(6 characters) turns intoSTRASSE(7). If a field has a limit, recount with the Word Counter.- Ligatures split into separate letters: the single character
fiinfixbecomesFI, givingFIX. - Turkish has a dotted capital İ. The default rules turn
istanbulintoISTANBUL, and Turkish text needstoLocaleUpperCase("tr")to getİSTANBUL. Use the default rules for identifiers, though, ortitlebecomesTİTLEon a Turkish system. - There's no way back. Lowercasing
STRASSEgivesstrasse, notstraße, so keep the original if you'll need it later.
Where capitals are the convention
In code and data, capital letters often carry meaning. These are the places you'll see them:
- CONSTANT_CASE, also called SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE, for constants:
MAX_RETRY_COUNTin JavaScript, Java and C, and in Python following the PEP 8 style guide. - Environment variables such as
DATABASE_URLandNODE_ENV. POSIX says the variables used by standard utilities contain only capital letters, digits and underscores. - PascalCase for classes, types and React components. React needs that capital: a JSX tag that starts with a small letter, like
<userCard />, is treated as a built-in HTML element. - Acronyms inside PascalCase count as one word, so
XMLHttpRequestbecomesXmlHttpRequest. That matches the .NET naming guidelines, which capitalize only the first letter of acronyms longer than two letters. - Standard codes: ISO country codes (
PK,BR,JP), currency codes (USD,EUR,INR), IATA airport codes (DXB,LHR) and HTTP methods (GET,POST). - SQL keywords like
SELECTandWHERE, written in capitals by habit. The database itself doesn't care. - Hashtags:
#WorldBookDayis easier to read than#worldbookday, and screen readers say the words separately. The PascalCase button builds it fromworld book day.
All caps in writing, and the CSS alternative
Whole sentences in capitals read as shouting in email and chat; RFC 1855, the netiquette guidelines from 1995, already said so. Long passages in capitals are also slower to read, and some screen readers spell short all-caps words letter by letter, as if they were acronyms. Keep capitals for short labels, codes and the odd word of emphasis. For headlines, title case is usually the better choice, and the Title Case Converter applies it for you.
On a web page, if a button or a small heading only needs to look uppercase, keep normal case in the HTML and add text-transform: uppercase; in CSS, as in the last code tab. The content stays in normal case, so a later redesign doesn't mean rewriting text. Word's All Caps formatting works the same way: the letters only look like capitals.
Uppercase text in code
Here's the same conversion in code. Look closely at PHP and SQLite: their older functions skip accented letters and ß.
"Hello world".toUpperCase(); // 'HELLO WORLD'
"istanbul".toLocaleUpperCase("tr"); // 'İSTANBUL' (Turkish rules)"Straße".upper() # 'STRASSE'mb_strtoupper("café straße"); // "CAFÉ STRASSE"
strtoupper("café straße"); // "CAFé STRAßE": only a to z change"Straße café".upcase # "STRASSE CAFÉ""Hello world".toUpperCase(Locale.ROOT)"Hello world".ToUpperInvariant()strings.ToUpper("Hello world")SELECT UPPER(country_code) FROM orders;
-- SQLite's built-in UPPER() changes only a to z: 'straße' gives 'STRAßE'echo "Hello world" | tr '[:lower:]' '[:upper:]'
name="Hello world"
echo "${name^^}" # Bash 4 or newer.button-label {
text-transform: uppercase;
}What is the shortcut for all caps in Word?
Select the text and press Shift+F3 to cycle through UPPERCASE, lowercase and capitalized words (Fn+Shift+F3 on some laptops and Macs). Ctrl+Shift+A, or Cmd+Shift+A on a Mac, applies All Caps formatting instead, which only changes how the letters look.
How do I convert text to uppercase in Excel or Google Sheets?
Use =UPPER(A1) in a new column and fill it down. Copy the results and paste them as values if you want to replace the original column.
How do I make text all caps in Google Docs?
Select the text and choose Format > Text > Capitalization > UPPERCASE. Unlike a font style, this changes the letters themselves.
Why does ß become SS?
The Unicode rules map ß to SS when uppercasing, because German long had no capital form of the letter. A capital ẞ (U+1E9E) exists and German spelling has allowed it since 2017, but JavaScript, Python, PHP and Ruby still return SS.
Is typing in all caps rude?
In emails, chats and comments, whole sentences in capitals come across as shouting, so most people avoid it. Capitals are fine for headings, acronyms, codes and forms that ask for block letters.
What is CONSTANT_CASE?
Capital letters with underscores between the words, like MAX_RETRY_COUNT. It's the usual style for constants and environment variables, and some people call it SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE.
Which languages have uppercase letters?
Only scripts with two letter cases, such as Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Armenian. Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Devanagari have no capitals, so the converter leaves them unchanged.
